Hubby and I are on the way out to the hospital this morning, bright and early.
Last night, as I sat at my desk around 10:15 p.m., just as I was finishing clearing the SD card for the camera, and copying down some music to my mp3 player for the hospital, my water broke. It was unmistakable and by 11 p.m. we were on our way to the hospital to get checked.
Petit is doing fine. I'm doing fine and after a few checks and monitorings of Petit's heartrate, we were sent home to try to get some rest until this morning and told to return to see how things are progressing.
Overnight, contractions hit the 6 minute mark (or thereabouts), however, I did manage to squeeze in 3 or 4 hours of semi decent rest. I know I'm "on the clock" now to deliver within about 24 hours of last night's time marker so we'll just hope that the contractions and pressure I'm feeling are productive today.
Promise to keep you all posted. Wish us luck!

OB Appointment (39w2d)
Nothing new to report. Still here, still hanging on.
And according to yesterday's OB appointment, all is still fine with Petit. Heartrate in the 140s, head still down against my cervix and lo and behold, a check revealed that the cervix is far forward and I'm dilated "a fingertip's worth." So it looks like I'll be able to go to my 40w2d appointment next Thursday. And Petit will be hanging in there til Mom and Aunt B arrive tomorrow night.
They also booked me for an ultrasound at the 40w6d mark to check things like placental functioning, baby's growth, level of amniotic fluid and all that good stuff. That appointment is for August 31, so in reality, Petit might be a September baby!
I'll be honest though; I'm really hoping I don't get that far. I really want to meet our little one before then!

Preparations Continue
It's 6:15 a.m. and I've been up for more than an hour. Typically, during the week that's perfect because I need to haul myself to work. However, this is Sunday morning and I ought to be dozing away the morning in bed. Alas, Petit has other thoughts: "Ha ha Mom, I'm awake and moving around in here, so you're going to be awake too!" Thus, I'm up. Obliging of me huh?
Much like Vee's recent post though, I love it. I love these moments when Petit and I are alone. No one else gets to experience this and I cherish that immensely. I get to lay my hands on my belly and feel Petit's legs rolling back and forth. I poke back when I feel a knee jab at me and I smile to myself. I rub underneath my ribs when Petit's toes dig in and I enjoy the knowledge that Petit is growing well and that I'm doing everything I possibly can to bring a healthy baby into this world. In a few short weeks, with luck, we'll get to meet Petit in person and I'll get to touch those legs, knees and toes. I'll get to feel Petit's fingers grasp mine. I'll get to kiss Petit's little face and I know I'll shed tears for days on end. I realize how blessed we are to get this far, and how lucky I am to get to feel the things that I am feeling right now. Make no mistake about it. There are only a few more weeks to go and I intend to continue to enjoy every single moment.
At last week's appointment, everything went perfectly. Petit's heartrate was 140. I'm measuring right on track. My BP was 136/80, no glucose or protein in my urine, and I've gained a few more pounds for a total increase of 7 pounds so far. Hopefully that will plateau soon! The doctor did the Group B Step swab and I'll get the results at next week's appointment. I HAVE to hope that it's negative; that would ease my mind terribly. Also at next week's appointment, I get to have another ultrasound! The OB indicated that because of my age, they'd like to get another look at Petit and the placenta to ensure that everything is going well. Given that I'll be 37 weeks and 2 days at my next appointment, thus full term, if there are any issues (and we hope that there aren't), we could move forward with whatever we need to in order to deliver Petit safely. One day at a time, one hurdle at a time, one issue at a time. That is how I continue to approach this entire experience and while I do not want to have any sort of induction or, heaven forbid, a scheduled c-section, if the placenta is aging too rapidly and not providing Petit with what the baby needs, then Petit would be safer on the outside. I'll cross that bridge when, and if, I come to it.
On Wednesday evening, hubby and I had an appointment to ensure that our car seat is properly installed. We spent a few hours at Saje's house in the south end of the city and I must say, we learned a LOT from her! She recognizes that she is a bona fide "car seat diva" as with a few kids of her own, she's gone through at least 26 different car seats through the years! She definitely knows her stuff! I'm keeping her phone number because after the baby hits the 22 lb mark, we'll need to upgrade our seat and she'll be able to advise us about what's available at the time and what would be best given baby's height and weight and all of that.
We talked to Saje about a variety of topics. Along the way, we shared some of our story with her and spoke of our experiences at McGill in Montreal. Interestingly enough, she's considered being an egg donor through McGill; I do so hope for her that it works out. It's so wonderful to know that there are loving, giving people out there in this world who would give of themselves (literally!) to help people have a family. I will continue to cross my fingers that it all goes smoothly for her.
I also shared my concerns with Saje about the issues I foresee when breastfeeding. Given that I have both hypothyroidism and PCOS (which are both linked to supply problems; great huh?!), I am doing everything that I can right now to ensure that milk supply is not an issue when Petit arrives. For those who may not know the details, by continuing to take the metformin for the PCOS and by continuing to check and adjust my synthroid for the hypothyroidism, I am doing the right things to make sure that I have enough milk for Petit after the baby is born. That said, Saje gave me the name of a lactation consultant. I need to give her a call in the next day or two to see if she will be available around Petit's due date. I know too there are supposedly consultants on staff at the hospital but getting an appointment isn't always the easiest task, apparently. That only happens with referral from a nurse in the maternity ward. So I'll play it safe and see if I can book something on my own if I can.
This weekend is a long weekend in Ontario so Monday is a holiday. I opted to take Friday off as well and I am so glad that I did. It's been lovely to have a few days to relax. Okay, okay, so I don't do much relaxing; hubby and I spent Friday running a few errands and repainting Petit's room. I love the new colour! We picked one of the new Behr colours (paint and primer in one); it's called Caribbean Sunrise and it really makes Petit's room look like a baby's room now. I can't wait to hang the curtains in there later today and fix it all up again. I'll post pics when it's all done. Promise.
Two things to note among my friends in the blogging world this week:
Mick and his wife (Wanna Be Dad) welcomed little Zofia on July 31! She is just gorgeous; go peek at his blog for photos.
And after trying IVM last year, Journey (who blogs elsewhere) and her husband E got a positive Beta last week with their first IVF through McGill. They're going on holiday down east so her ultrasound will be pushed to August 21. I have a wonderful feeling about this and I'm grinning from ear to ear for them both!

OB Appointment (33w 2d; includes photos)
I had an ultrasound this afternoon to measure Petit's growth. It's been awhile since I've had an ultrasound now, so it was nice to get a look at the baby again! I can never get tired of hearing the heartbeat. Honestly. I'm seriously thinking of taking the recording we have into Build A Bear and having it incorporated into a bear for myself!
Long story very short: Petit is measuring right on track. It's ridiculous how things seem to be going so well. Kinda scary in fact. But that's just my worry talking, right? RIGHT?
Petit was moving around like crazy! That always makes the tech's job more difficult, but as she reiterated, movement is a VERY good thing! Petit is head down, very close to the cervix. No wonder I'm feeling such pressure! The heartrate is 152. My cervix length is 3.5 cms so all is good there too; no worries about a cervix that isn't holding up. Petit's estimated weight right now is 4.7 lbs, with a head circumference of 30 cms (10 cms from front to back and 8 cms from side to side), and an abdominal circumference of 29 cms. And the length of a femur measured at 6.2 cms. There's LOTS of amniotic fluid (high levels within the normal ranges) so that's okay too. All in all, the 'corrected' gestational age is 33.3 weeks... right on track.
This is a shot of Petit's head, with a bit of a profile on the left side. We saw fists flailing around as this was taken. SO cool!

As for me, I've lost the weight I gained apparently. I'm down 7 lbs, so I've not gained or lost anything over the course of the pregnancy so far. With luck, that will continue! My blood pressure is normal at 136/74 and there's no protein or glucose in my urine. I still have a cyst (outside the uterus) and it's now at 8x6 cms. Damn thing! *shakes a fist* The good news is, the fibroid I had earlier on seems to be gone... it's not visible on the ultrasound and the tech did both an abdominal and a vaginal ultrasound to be certain. So I'm glad. The presence of large fibroids near the cervix can mean a c-section so I'm more than thrilled that it's no longer there/visible.
And I talked to the nurse about our visit to L&D last week. When I described the pain to her, she immediately thought round ligament pain and stretching to prepare for delivery. I usually get round ligament pains lower, near the low abdomen and groin area. But this was up high, like under my left breast, up in the ribcage. VERY high. She said that the ligaments do stretch up high, so it might have been that. She's not entirely certain. Regardless, I've not had another episode since, but the nurse was glad that I went last week to get it checked anyway.
So far, so good. I'm glad to know that everything is going well and I'm chugging right along. I've begun to pack up some stuff at my office; personal stuff will come home with me while papers for the office will be boxed up to move. I know my team will be relocating at least once while I'm on maternity leave so I want to make things easy for them to handle if at all possible.
At home, the washer got fixed the other day (YAY! And thanks for the offer Mary!) and I'm waiting for the new curtains that my aunt made to arrive. This weekend I hope to tape off Petit's room so that hubby can do some painting. As I mentioned, I want to change the colour in there to a brighter yellow. Something more appropriate for a baby. And no, I won't be getting on any ladders to do any of this. What I cannot reach, hubby will do and he's offered to paint as well, even though it's latex that we'll be using.
I've heard from two of my aunts who've booked tickets to come to see us and meet Petit in mid to late September. There was a sweet seat sale on the other day and they couldn't pass it up. I can't blame them. My mom and my other aunt are still hoping to catch a seat sale and are thinking about arriving around one week before my due date... around about the time I finish working.
I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the real possibility that in six weeks or so, we're going to have another member added to our family. We're going to get to welcome a little baby into our lives, into our world. It's so incredible to me, there are no words. I'm in awe that we have gotten this far and I recognized how blessed we are. Daily. I give thanks. Daily. I am moved to tears. Daily. I don't know how this all happened, but I continue to hope that in the end, our rainbow will appear.

Less Than 15 Weeks Left
Annnnnddddd... we're back!
After a very hectic few weeks and some much needed vacation time, hubby and I are back at home and back to our routine. Well, mostly. More about that in a moment.
My folks arrived near the end of April and spent a full week with us here in the Capital before all four of us piled in our van and headed south of the 49th parallel. We drove to West Virginia, with a stop overnight near Buffalo, NY. We headed that way because I wanted to get some shopping done in Watertown and then in Waterloo (at the outlet shops). Despite a little rain, we had no problem and made it to Ripley, WV in good time.
We found my sister's new house with no trouble and we hit the ground running. Over the course of our week in WV, we went to my BIL's graduation from Marshall University (ever see the movie We Are Marshall? Great film. Highly recommended.), we attended a party organized by my sister and my BIL's sister to celebrate. And we made sure to attend yet another local gathering of graduates in his hometown. Talk about busy! We went to dinner and brunch with my BIL's family, whom we all adore. We took one full day when all six of us went to my sis's old house to clean it up for the next tenant. We spent one full day shopping (mostly for Petit on my part). And Mom made sure to buy me some new maternity clothing to hold me over the summer; that was my birthday gift from her. All in all, a crazy, busy week. But it was so much fun to see everyone.
As a note, while we were there, my sister used a glucometer to check my blood sugar levels. I don't yet have my fasting results from the bloodwork I had done right before I left on this vacation, but to reassure my brain, and my sister, I didn't mind having the tests done. Keeping in mind that the numbers are American (Canadian numbers differ vastly as the method of measuring differs), I am pretty sure we're safe. My fasting sugars were at 80 and two hours post-prandial, I was at 96. My sister is the diabetes coordinator for the state of West Virginia and she said she wanted to see my numbers at less than 100. She seemed happy with the results. As am I.
On Thursday the 14th, hubby and I said our goodbyes to the entire gang and headed out to drive from Ripley, WV over to Woodbridge VA, just south of Washington, D.C. I have to say, the drive was harrowing! The Applachian Mountains are really something to behold, but holy heaven, the twists and turns, the hills and valleys, the plethora of dizzying drops and steep inclines had me sucking in my breath on more than one occasion. Yikes!
Over in VA, we were met by our friends and we stayed with them for three nights. It was good to see them again. We needed a little downtime and I was thrilled to have time to go for a pedicure with KH and her six-year old daughter. It was her daughter's first pedicure and she was tickled pink with the results! So cute! I got a ton of shopping done for Petit. I picked up the exact swing that I was looking for which was sheer luck. You see, what I wanted was the Ocean Wonders swing. However, it's now discontinued by Fisher Price in favour of the Precious Planet line of products, much to my dismay. However, we found one just by chance that had been returned (unopened) and was on the clearance rack at the local store in Woodbridge. I saved over $70 on that one item alone! We picked up a travel-sized play yard too, and I got some sheets and bedding, a cute mobile, and a few more odds and ends that we were looking for. I even managed to find the baby gate that we wanted with the small cutout door for my cats down in the States! We can't seem to find or get it up here, so I was happy that Petsmart had it when we went there. I really lucked out on some items, that's for sure. Mind you, we still have some things to get (lotions, cloth diapers, the monitor, etc.) but we're checking things off the list.
I'm down to under 100 days to go in this pregnancy and that alone still stuns me. Double digits! Jeez. I never thought I'd make it this far. It doesn't seem fair though. We took 6+ years to GET pregnant, and we only have a mere 9 months to enjoy it?! Talk about a cruel joke that Mother Nature plays on us infertiles. I say that we ought to revel in being pregnant for just as long as it took to get us pregnant! Not the discomfort or complications or things like that. But the glow. The round belly that everyone wants to touch. The prospect of unbridled joy. We all deserve to enjoy it to the absolute fullest, don't we?
During our time away, Petit has become much more active. Frequently Petit will be wide awake around 11 p.m., again around 3 or 4 a.m., and then again around 6 or 7 a.m. And kicking up a storm each time! There was one night that the baby kept me up for over three hours as I tossed and turned trying to settle him/her down enough to rest again. It just wasn't gonna happen. I probably got 4.5 hours of sleep that night; a harbinger of things to come I suspect. One night, I was lying in bed at my sister's house, about 3 in the morning as Petit had woken me, and I put my hands on my tummy. I felt the ripples, over and over. The weird, yet incredible, sensation of feeling the baby beneath my palms. I smiled. I get to enjoy these simple moments for such a short time; it's only a very small window of time that I have the opportunity to connect with Petit on my own, before he/she arrives in the world. It's so fleeting. Like I said, never long enough.
Hubby has been feeling Petit move as well. Just the night before last, he was lying in bed, arm around me (as he frequently does) and while I slept, Petit kicked him. And last night, Petit made a spectacular show of skills as Hubby's fingers felt every move. For more than an hour, the two of us lay in the dark and giggled and grinned, smiling as Petit reacted to Hubby's voice and the occasional poke. I am humbled by the experience; I wish nothing more than to remember exactly what this feels like. I wish nothing more than to let all of us experience these moments. We deserve it. We ALL deserve to experience this.
Now that we're home, I'm back at work and Hubby is, unfortunately, looking for work. His contract expired while we were away and financial cutbacks have seen to it that contractors are no longer requested by the organization he worked for. I expect it won't be long before he finds something, however, given his field (he's an IT support specialist), it may be harder at the moment than it has been in a long time. We're keeping our fingers crossed. Wish us luck.
Next Thursday is my 39th birthday and on that day, I believe my office has organized a shower for me. As well, I will have my last monthly OB appointment on that same day; after that I move to appointments every two weeks. I cannot believe I'm about to hit my third trimester. And I continue to hope and dream about bringing this baby home safely at the end of August.
